The FOCUS Foundation is the 501c3 component of FOCUS, Inc. Focus, Inc. is a social and philanthropic organization of gay and lesbian professionals in southwest Missouri.  Founded in 2002 The FOCUS Foundation Scholarship Grant has been awarded to over 30 students across SWMO. Annually, between $3500 and $5000 is awarded. To date, the scholarship grant committee has given nearly $43,000. This year The FOCUS Foundation will again award scholarship grants that can total between $500 and $2000 to individuals who represent the ideals of the foundation. The grant will be paid to the post-secondary institution where the recipient is currently enrolled. It will be applied towards tuition, fees, supplies, or university housing expenses. The grant is valid for only the year it is awarded. The grant cannot be used for a student’s previous bill at the post-secondary institution. Selection is based on a broad criteria emphasizing potential for success, community involvement and activism as well as financial need.

Timeline for Application Process

(Please note these deadlines. The segment of the process is to be completed by the dates set below.)

  • December 31, 2016 – application packets distributed & available online
  • February 19, 2017 – completed applications & essays received
  • February  29, 2017 – application confirmation notifications sent
  • March 15, 2017 –packets completed with references & transcripts
  • March 30, 2017 – applicants selected for interviews & notifications sent
  • April 30, 2017 – interviews completed; recipients recommended
  • May 5, 2017 – board approves recommendations
  • May 9, 2017 – scholarship awards given in person to recipients
  • June 13, 2017 – deadline for final scholarship awards to recipients


Requirements for Eligibility

  • The applicant must be identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered or the child of a gay, lesbian, or transgendered person.
  • The applicant must be a resident of southwest Missouri.
  • The applicant must be currently enrolled as one of the following:
    • High School Senior and currently accepted at a post-secondary institution
    • College or University undergraduate or graduate student
    • In a state-certified GED program
  • No current Focus Foundation Board of Director, partner of a Board of Director, or immediate family member of a Board of Director may apply for a scholarship grant

Application Packet Requirements

(Applicants are responsible to meet the deadlines and follow the criteria below. Failure to meet the deadlines or follow the criteria for the completion of the application packet will result in the applicant’s dismissal from the scholarship committee’s consideration.)


  • Completed grant application
    • The application must be completed in blue or black ink OR type written.
    • The completed application must be legible and easy to read.
    • The application must be submitted online or postmarked no later than February 15, 2017.


  • Three (3) letters of recommendation
    • The letters must be sent under separate cover to the scholarship committee.
    • The letters should be from references who know the applicant well.
    • The letters of recommendation submitted online or postmarked no later than March 15, 2017.


  • Official copy of transcript from high school or college
    • The transcripts must be sent under separate cover to the scholarship committee.
    • The transcripts must be the official document from the educational institution where applicant is currently enrolled.
    • The transcripts submitted online or postmarked no later than March 15, 2017.


  • 400 word essay – “My Role in a Diverse Society”
    • The essay must be the original work of the applicant.
    • The essay must be type written in an easy to read font of size 12.
    • The essay must be double spaced on white paper.
    • The essay must not exceed 400 words.
    • The essay must be free of errors in spelling and grammar.
    • The essay must be sent with the completed application and submitted online or postmarked no later than February 15, 2017.

Applicants are reminded that failure to meet the deadlines or requirements to complete the application packet will result in their removal from the scholarship’s committee consideration for the 2017 awards.

Please Note:

All recipients of The FOCUS Foundation Grant Scholarship are required to accept the scholarship award in person at a monthly meeting of FOCUS, Inc. in either May or June 2017. Failure to appear to receive the grant scholarship during one of those 2 opportunities will render the offer of the grant scholarship null and void.
